Volunteers are the heart of Kaleidoscope Youth Coalition

by Heather Lashaway

Youth

Columbus-Kaleidoscope Coalition's mission is to provide a safe environment, develop programming, and coordinate advocacy to encourage the positive growth and development of sexually diverse youth. Our definition of youth is 21 and younger.

Kaleidoscope is open on Monday, Friday, and Saturday from 7 pm to 10pm. On Wednesday nights Phoenix Pride, a support group for sexually diverse youth, meets from 6 pm to 8 pm. The center has a computer lab, lending library, television, VCR, stereo, and video games. Kaleidoscope also provides factual information to youth on many topics, including safe sex, health issues, support groups, higher education, and many other resources. Kaleidoscope, with the help of wonderful volunteers, sponsors many activities for

GLBTQ youth, including hiking trips, game nights, trips to local coffee houses, out-oftown conferences, karaoke, going out to eat, as well as many other activities.

Kaleidoscope has received a Chicago Resource Grant for deafinclusive programming.

Eleventh season broke records for men's chorus

by Jeff Woodard

Columbus-Members of the Columbus Gay Men's Chorus spent a good deal of time preparing for last weekend's season-ending concerts by being reminded of that familiar cry: "The British are coming!"

Now that they've come and gone, the chorus has put the wraps on another recordbreaking season under artistic director David Monseur. "The British Invasion," performed June 1-2, spanned the ages, celebrating the music of the English Renaissance, Andrew Lloyd Webber, the Beatles, Queen, Eric Clapton and Elton John.

"Our holiday concert last December sold out two consecutive performances [in the 900-seat Southern Theatre]," says chorus marketing director Terry Thompson. "Of the four performances (prior to the June 1-2 shows) this season, three have had recordbreaking attendance."

Thompson estimates that the chorus, which averaged about 100 singing members for each of its shows in 2000-01, will take in

more than $60,000 in concert ticket sales for its 11th season.

Another sellout at the Southern Theatre occurred when the chorus held a hugely popular fundraising event, Out Loud. Star-

ring nationally recognized comedian Kate Clinton, the success of the program ensured that the laugh fest will continue next season with more out comedians.

"The plan," says Thompson, "is for this event to eventually grow into a gay and lesbian comedy festival.”
